Cypress Knees at Goose Lake

Cypress Knees BW

White River National Wildlife Refuge, Arkansas

For this image, I arrived at the location about half an hour before sunrise, hoping that some fog would be present on the surface of the water as the sun began to rise.  Even though no fog was present, I decided to wade out into the lake and use a telephoto zoom to isolate compositions of Cypress knees along the banks.  The sounds of birds calling out and animals splashing in the waters of the swamp in the early hours before sunrise can be described as magical, surreal, and spooky all at the same time.  Once home, while reviewing the images, I liked the shapes and lines of the knees, but was disappointed in the lack of contrast and color in the overall scene.  In the end, I decided that the image is stronger in black and white.
